VERA Produce Show

This judges Judy & John Sheen selected this entry in the herb class as their overall favourite and were delighted to present the engraved trowel to Joanna Buckley.

Members watching a hive inspection by Dave Cassell, Vice Chair IWBKA, who kindly gave up his Bank Holiday afternoon to show them what goes on inside a beehive, checking for problems like wasps or disease, and how to prepare hives for the coming winter.

See you all again next year.

Produce show 2009

VERA's 2009 Produce Show on Bank Holiday Sunday was another enjoyable event organised by the management committee with the help and support of several members.

Judy & John Sheen have been judging our shows since they were launched 4 years ago.  They have keenly supported the regeneration of the East Cowes allotments and encourage members to exhibit the fruits of their labours, by providing tips for showing, which people have found invaluable.

Most members are novice vegetable growers so were particularly thrilled when the judges complimented them on the high standard of produce this year.

A highlight of the day this year was a visit by Dave Cassell, Vice Chairman of the Isle of Wight Beekeeping Association, who demonstrated a hive inspection to members.   (See more information on the 2009 Bee Conservation project elsewhere on this site).

Each year the judges select an entry that in their opinion is outstanding.   This year the award went to Joanna Buckley for her entry in the herb class.  As you can see from this picture she cut the letters H E R B S out of oasis which enabled her to display a huge selection of herbs that are grown on her family's plot - an exquisite entry that wowed everyone.

VERA members routinely deliver fresh vegetables to the residents of nearby Coburg Court but the delivery of produce after the show was a bonus.
